Step 1: Start with the idea, not the outcome

You do not need a finished brief. In fact, it is better if you do not. Begin with what matters to you.It may be a place, a memory, a landscape, an animal, a feeling, or a moment in time. It may be a space you are designing for, or a story you want to preserve.Reference images can be helpful, but they are not instructions. They are starting points.The role of the artist is to interpret, not to copy.

Step 2: Have a conversation

The first conversation is where alignment is established.For the client, it is an opportunity to explain the idea and its significance.For the artist, it is an opportunity to understand intention, context, and expectation.Together, the following questions are usually explored:What is the subject?Why does it matter?Where will the work live?What scale is appropriate?Are there colour considerations?What is the timeframe?What is the budget?And what should the work feel like?This stage is not about final decisions.It is about clarity.

Step 3: Define the creative framework

Once the idea is understood, the practical structure is established.This may include medium, size, orientation, framing, reference material, timeline, and delivery.At this point, expectations are also clarified. A commission is a collaboration, but it is not unlimited revision.There must be enough structure to guide the process, and enough freedom for the work to remain authentic. Without both, the work loses integrity.

Step 4: Confirm the agreement

Before any work begins, the commission is formally agreed.A clear quotation should outline what is included, what is not included, and how the process will unfold.This typically covers:The artwork or design scopeMaterials and production costsFraming, if applicableTimeline and milestonesDeposit and payment structureDelivery or collectionAny additional costs or conditionsClarity at this stage protects both sides.It ensures the process remains focused, transparent, and professional.

Step 5: The creative process

Once the commission begins, the work moves into production. This is the stage where trust becomes essential. In some cases, progress updates may be shared. In others, the work may develop independently until completion. There is no single correct approach. What matters is that expectations are agreed in advance. A commission is not a constant negotiation. It is a structured creative process. Too much interference can dilute the work. Too little communication can create uncertainty. As always, balance is key.

Step 6: Completion and delivery

When the work is finished, final details are confirmed. This may include finishing, framing, final approval, payment of the balance, and delivery or collection. At this point, the work leaves the studio and enters its next context. It becomes part of a home, a space, a collection, or a brand. It becomes part of a lived environment.

Once the brief is clear, the design process begins. This may involve typography, colour, layout, composition, and visual language. The goal is not simply to create something visually appealing, the goal is to create something that communicates effectively and consistently. Design must function before it is judged aesthetically.

Step 4: Review and refinement

Design is feedback-driven. Feedback is expected and necessaryHowever, effective feedback is specific. It explains what is not working and why. It does not simply reject direction without context. A strong process depends on structured revision, not continuous rethinking.

Step 5: Final delivery

Once approved, final files are prepared for their intended use.This may include print, digital, or brand asset formats. At this stage, ownership, usage, and application are clearly defined. The project is complete when it can function independently.
