Wild Presence explores the quiet yet powerful intensity of surrounding wild animals, nature and how observation becomes connection.

The series is rooted in my fascination with the way wild creatures inhabit their surroundings: alert yet still, powerful yet restrained, watchful yet completely at ease. Rather than simply portraying the animal, I am interested in the space between the animal and its environment; the light, colour, atmosphere and landscape that shape the experience of seeing it.

The paintings draw from memories of place as much as from the animals themselves. The rich colours and atmospheric landscapes in works such as Dappled Dreaming and Filtered Focus are influenced by deep sunset scenes of lush green mountains and winding rivers. These landscapes bring together elements of places that have stayed with me, particularly my connections to South Africa and Nepal.

Leopards hold a particular fascination for me. Their ability to rest while remaining intensely aware, their wariness, silence and understated power speak to something I find deeply compelling. They embody a kind of presence that requires no display; a quiet strength that comes from knowing when to watch, when to wait and when to move.

Through Wild Presence, I am interested in the act of looking. In noticing the animal, but also the light falling across its coat, the landscape behind it, the pause before movement, and the feeling of being observed in return.

 

These paintings are therefore not only studies of wild animals. They are studies of presence, perception and place; an invitation to pause, look closely and spend a little longer in the wild.
